i was diagnosed with cancer 2 weeks into my 32nd year. 32 proved to completely suck.
i am so, so happy to have another marker to put this year behind me. 33, like my old friend laura dougherty said, will be a bright shiny new year. i wonder when the last time i was so happy to welcome a birthday...1983? 1991?
so far it's starting off wonderfully. beautiful sunny warmish day in sf. already opening presents. quiet breakfast and coffee. multiple notes and messages from everyone i love. and a poker night tonight with a few of the most important people in my life?! priceless. :)
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
