call for movie suggestions

So it seems I will have a lot of time on my hands with all of these surgeries and treatments.

Can we start a list of all of your favorite upbeat or relaxing or make-you-forget-your-situation type movies for me to start watching?

Dear, dear Meghan,
Three times in my life I have been hit by a whammy: an event that threw my life right out of its surefooted little existence. The first was when I met, on Aug. 7, 1989, an (self-professed) overweight bus driver from Utah with no money, and on Sept. 8, 1989, married him! The outcome of that whammy is obvious: we are totally committed to one another and remain each other's soulmate, yea these 18 years later. The second whammy was in Dec. 1997 when Jim called me from his routine physical and told me that his doctor had found an abdominal aortal aneurysm, and that 1) Jim would not be able to work that winter season in YNP, 2) he needed to go directly to Billings and see a vascular surgeon, and 3)do not pass go and do not collect $300. When Jim had his AAA operation, 2 days later, his surgeon said if the aneurysm had not been detected, Jim would have died within 2 weeks. His aneurysm, measured at 13 cm., still holds the record as the largest his surgeon has seen. The third whammy was Mar. of 2005, as you may remember. Jim had been dragging around and was diagnosed with pneumonia. A week later he had a terrific pain in his calf, and the clinic in West Yellowstone told us to go to the ER in Bozeman, which we did. After sitting in the waiting area for 2 hours, the MD couldn't find any pulse in Jim's leg and we were life-flighted to Billings. I had expected us to be seen and treated in Bozeman and be sent home. LIttle did I know: 24 hours later, Jim was in surgery and the danger of his losing his foot was very real, if they could not restore circulation...And during the operation, a totally unexpected thing happened: his heart went into arrhythmia, and they had to use the paddles to resuscitate him. Suffice to say, the surprises were scary and I found myself praying that Jim would survive. And, as we know, he did: after some scary shit. What I am trying to convey to you, my sweet Meghan, is that these bad things happen (to the best of people) and we must adjust our outlook to accommodate them. The important thing is to keep in mind that wonderful percentage: 96 percent curable. Hey, I'd take those odds any day. The whammy portions of the program you will deal with in time: and I truly believe that you are equipped to handle them with dignity. During Jim's ordeal (it wasn't mine, I was just the soulmate), I was totally open to the offers of help from Sandy and stepdaughter Joanne (who both came to Billings to hold our hands) and anyone else who could help alleviate the scariness and helplessness we felt. You must let all of us who love you do whatever we can to help you through your trial: never hesitate to accept a gesture of support (or ask for one) when you need it, and also, to let us know when you need us to step back. It is all part of the whammy-dealing with.
We are here for you,
WIth much love and support,
Auntie LIndy and Uncle Buck

I say HBO series are the way to go... they just last so much longer! If you haven't seen them yet, that is... First watch BIg Love, then any and all Sopranos seasons you may have missed. Right now I'm obsessed with 24 (Fox, not HBO) -- it's not exactly happy go lucky, but it sure makes you forget about the real world for a little while.

Much love to you, my friend!!!

Hmmm, can I also recommend 'The Queen" as well as any and all episodes of The Muppet Show?

The Planet Earth series!!!!!
Look, I'm not kidding, it's so amazing, forget what everyone else said, just rent this whole series. I'm obsessed. You'll be too! Think Earth from Above times 10.

Karl and I have a moratorium on talking about it (because we realized we were boring everyone), so I can't say much more, but netflix it. Seriously.

Hey Meghan,

this will be a message with many mistakes, because its from Germany!
My name is Steffi, Marcos wife, friends of Eric.

we just got this bad news yesterday and we were shocked!!!!
I just wanted to give you much power for this (I say it in erics words) fucking time u have.

I cant say, that i had something like u in my life before, but I also lost a peace of my body as i was 8.

But I did some things wrong in my behavior:

I didnt talk very much about it, I wasnt serious about it and told everybody, that im glad with it, i expact sentence like "it could be more worst than that" and much more.

dont make the same mistakes like i did, use erics power and love and his big and serious laughing to get trough this time.

take every hand u get and use it when ever u need it, it wont be egoistic.
just do what ever YOU wanna do!

remember good times and put them "back" to your future, so u have new things u can wait for...

I just lost my grandmother (67 years old) on 13th of June this year because of pancreas cancer.
So please do me a favour: kick this fucking cancer out of your body that my grandma is avenged and that you can start a new life with eric and your family and your friends.

I know its easy to say, but dont think about things that could happen or could change, because you need all your power for the presence(?). and there will be a time when some of these "could happens" reach u or even not and then u can think about them or you even dont need to think about it!

I know from eric that you would love to have children and anyway u will have them no matter how no matter when!
I also think, that we persuade eric with our sunshine shaun alexander, and eric is waiting for u "beeing prepaid"!!! (If u know what i want to say)

Oh u asked for a song or a movie...

I give u a german song from a band called glashaus (translation glashouse)
its called
haltet die welt an ( hold on the world)if you want i give u a translation if eric is not able to translate it;-)

and something against your bad feelings because it makes me feeling good: Big girls dont cry

funny movies if you want to watch funny things about babys go to youtube and ask for baby, i couldnt stop laughing about them.

dont watch sad things!!!!

We pray for your hopefully soon convalescense.

Marco, Steffi and shaun

Dear Meghan,

This is Linda, cousin of the amazing Judy and Susan, who is so sad to hear of your breast cancer. You may not remember me. I really only got to see/know you when you were young, and saw you a couple of times when you were "grown up", but my memory of you is surrounded with lots and lots of golden light (the hair???) and laughter. And that laughter is one of the most important elements of healing. When I had bladder cancer, I imagined it being eaten up by PacMan (now doesn't that date me??) and watched comdies all the time - good, bad, ugly, classic, hysterical, groaners, etc., - but I laughed every day. That was 20 years ago.

You are blessed to have Eric and your parents with you. Your sense of humor shines in your blog - and when you have time to take a deep breath and look back on this experience, you might consider writing a book about it. You've got the gift, girl!

I'll be thinking of you and reading your posts. Love to Mom, please.

The Money Pit!!!!!

Ok, but seriously, (although TMP is sooo funny! also of course rewatch my other favs.. Trading Places, Ghostbusters)

But really, to follow up on Gretchen's tip... I would totally go for the HBO type series...
I'm sure you've done Six Feet Under and the Sopranos...
but I just watched
'Freaks and Geeks' from awhile back but same producer as 'Knocked up' and '40 year old virgin'.... i enjoyed it....

and what about 'arrested development'.... sooo funny, you would totally love the humor.
or 'the office' (american one). hilarious....

also think gx said--'big love'
but what about
'weeds'
or 'huff'
(god, i sound like all i do is rent netflix)... but really-- all are good and suck you in.

Movies:
Annie Hall, Sleepers and Bananas by Woody Allen. Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and others by Mel Brooks. The Sundance site has a list and description of recommended films. Watch Kung Fu Hustle again! Amelia is sooo charming. Momento and The Illusionist (both Edward Norton). Scotland, PA and Oh, Brother Where Art Thou for modern versions of Macbeth and The Odyssey (or whatever spelling your prefer). You, Me and Everyone we Know. Hero.
Books:
The Plot Against America (Philip Roth, haven't read yet). Little Children (Tim Marotta? recommended as movie, too). Augusten Burroughs and David Sedaris. The Beloved by Toni Morrison for a second time if you've read already. Annual collected stories such as O'Henry awards, best travel stories, and best short stories. Maybe some how-to books about various crafts, or interior design, sewing, creative writing, origami, regional cuisines, or selling a house. Also, public tv runs POV during the summer (independent videos with a Point of View). The topics are usually thought-provoking and well-presented. We get it on Tuesdays at 10p.m. And while you're reading, let me know if you come across anything to prevent Maddy and Kirby from catching birds and frogs!! Hmm, I wonder if there's a Cat Training for Dummies (or does that prove you're a dummie if you think cats will deign to be trained?)

Hi Meghan,

Just wanted to let you know that our family favorite movie is "Galaxy Quest". We can't stop laughing every time we watch it.

Stay strong.

Hi, Meg,
Ignore those who suggested things like The Departed & Blood Diamond. Too violent & depressing. Might as well recommend Mel Gibson's cheery Apocalypto... I vote for feel-good funny flicks. Lots of stupid Steve Martin, Lily Tomlin, etc.....Here's the Eastpeople list of favorites I didn't see on others' lists:
My Blue Heaven
Waking Ned Devine
Love Actually
Big Night
4 Weddings & a Funeral
The Full Monty
Bend It Like Beckham
All of Me
The Namesake
Boston Legal (previous seasons)
Perhaps many you've already seen, but many deserve repetition. XOXO, PKE et al
